I agree with Schnit. While my family is only three, I am aware of the extra needs of larger families. First choice would be extended stay properties (Staybridge Suites, Element, Residence Inn, Townplace Suites, Homewood Suites, etc.). I know this is the IHG forum; however, I think you will find that both Marriott and Hilton have larger portfolios of extended stay properties. Nothing wrong with Staybridge Suites; however, there are limited locations available. Candlewood Suites, the other IHG extended stay brand, doesn't include breakfast. I have also found a larger percentage of Candlewood Suites to be subpar properties. So I don't stay at them unless I know a particular property is good.

Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, and Fairfield Inn are all good second choices that usually have at least two double bed rooms with complimentary breakfast. They frequently also have Junior Suites available that add a sleeper sofa for a modest upcharge in the daily rate. Springhill Suites are even better. They all have a sitting area with either a trundle bed (newer properties) or a sleeper sofa (older properties) in addition to two beds and complimentary breakfast.

Finally note in major cities, the format for all brands may be different than the traditional layout. For Example in NYC. Residence Inn and Springhill Suites all have compact room formats. They don't have the extra space you find at a typical property in a suburban or smaller city location. There are exceptions that still have the larger room format; however, you shouldn't depend on it. In the major cities, you will likely need two rooms (connecting if your kids are young) or pay for an upgrade to a larger suite. In this situation, you should call the property in advance to make sure they can accommodate your needs.
