If you fly on LIGHT fare (any booking class) the seat is not free, and you don't get free extra bag, as explained many times here on FT, you can select a standard seat (excluded preferred zone and exits) on classic fare or above (no status helps), and during check in, you can select or change to a different seat from the one given during ckin process (only same category) for free, and for CLASSIC fare or above, if not, there is a fee for everyone (even for HON).
Try to access the booking on LH app and select a seat, if you are required to pay for it, then wait for h-24h to check in and then "change" seat, if you don't like the one you have. Unfortunatelly flying these days is paying, paying and paying, no comfort and no space, packed planes, delays and mediocre service.
I might’ve misunderstood, but if you’re saying that SEN and HON also need to pay for preferred/extra legroom seat selection even in economy classic, I believe you are wrong:
