I stayed here for a few nights in the aftermath of last week's Middle East travel chaos. Initially booked one night late in the evening when it became clear that my DXB-DOH flight wasn't happening, then extended for a few days while sorting out my next steps.

Overall I liked the stay, although there are a few negatives.
  • During my late checkin, and also when I extended the next day, I was offered a choice of two upgrades: Same (basic) room type with a creek view, or a larger room but no creek view. I went for the view the first night, then for the larger room (which, at 65 sqm, would pass as a suite in some hotels).
  • Staff were generally very friendly and helpful; the Concierge desk tried really hard to get my luggage delivered from DXB (where I had checked it in, but then not flown). It didn't work and in the end I had to make a trip to the airport (for which the hotel is quite well located, just a 5 minute taxi drive for under 30 AED) which wasn't a big deal, but they seemed to feel really bad that they couldn't solve it for me.
  • I didn't receive an in-rooom welcome gift or note; that was not a surprise as I showed up on very short notice the first night and then wasn't a real new arrival anymore. Late checkout wasn't a problem; they actually asked whether "4pm is enough". It was, so I didn't find out how late I could have pushed it.
  • Elites can have breakfast in the lounge or in the restaurant (it's not necessary to pick this as a welcome gift). The restaurant has a larger selection, but turns into a zoo when it's busy. There is a barista station which is nice, but again, when it's busy there is no queuing in any way, but people are just served in the order in which they manage to push in. I usually just had a plate of hot dishes in the restaurant and then went to the lounge which tended to be more quiet in the morning.
  • The hotel has a nice new feel. However, upon further inspection it seemed that they gone cheap on some materials and finishings. There were weirdly misaligned tiles in some places (leaving gaps on surfaces where one could conceivably end up with scratches when one doesn't expect this), but the worst was a weird wobbly plastic floor in the shower (only in the larger room, not the creek view room) which did not allow water to drain at all. I almost slipped when I got into the shower in the morning, 12 hours after I had used it, and didn't expect a massive puddle.
  • The AC In the room seemed to be set to a fixed temperature (my guess is 21C). Setting it to a higher or lower temperature didn't seem to change anything. I don't know whether this was a defect just in my room; I like it a bit warmer, but couldn''t be bothered to investigate this further and just regulated it by switching on/off as required.
  • The lounge is nice. It's quite big, but well partitioned. It's open 24/7 for soft drinks and a good selection of fruit, sweets and savoury nibbles.
  • However, in the evening the lounge couldn't cope with the number of guests. Most of the time there were no tables available. To make matters worse, there was no clear system for queuing/waiting; some staff members tried to keep track of who was waiting and tried to get them a table ASAP, but others didn''t care at all, which meant that one would have had to literally fight for a table (several other guests weren't very inclined to self-organize this or wait their turn). Most evenings I didn't bother waiting as the food offering wasn't that great; you'd have a hard time making a meal out of it unless you focus on a lot of cheese and dessert.
  • I also tried the Italian restaurant. It was quite good. I had a voucher for 25% off (on the whole bill) in my room; most probably that's available in every room which means that a high percentagle of guests in that restaurant will have it; I couldn't help but feel that this is to some degree factored into their à la carte prices so that eating there without that discount feels overpriced.
I would stay here again, particularly if relative proximity to the airport is useful.
