I see there's a bit of a workaround though:
When it finally came to adding my child onto my booking, the agent on the phone told me to add him to the friends and family list, which doesn’t involve a sign-up page and was pretty much an instant job. She was then able to pull across the details and add to the booking.
It doesn’t solve the actual issue that you can’t add a new person without a BA account to your household, but it did what was needed at the time.

This would be fine for Avios bookings but they wouldn't earn miles if a revenue fare. I'm going to try it
