I'm not sure CI really knows what to do with AE besides they need to keep the entity around for China rights allocation. If they didn't have that issue, there is really no reason for AE to exist.
Well, AE was first created for flights to Australia and Canada in the 90s. The original purpose of AE was long gone. It's been about cross strait bilateral since 2008 and I don't think AE will disappear at all as that will prolong with no talks between the current administrations on both sides. I think keeping AE makes sense for the rights plus there are still domestic routes.
