I agree that the OP will be paying up $$ at the LX counter. OP should accept that fact. But.....
Aren't flights which touch the US subject to "most significant carrier" rules (ie, the folks which fly you over the pond, in this case, presumably UA). In this situation, does the OP have justification is sending in the bag fee to be refunded after the fact because UA would not charge them by their rules?
