You just have to see what the booking engine offers. Sometimes it's the codeshare, sometimes it's the native flight number.
United.com’s search engine will always use the UA code if it exists. Google Flights can sometimes get native codes to appear where they otherwise wouldn’t.
A travel agent will have access to all valid flight number combinations.
