Indeed. Though back to the idea of flat tire--in terms of onwards transportation, there seems to be no easy recovery for missing a train? At least not that I'm aware of.

I agree the up charge is worth the flexibility. I almost always bump up to flex. Although, at times I find having tickets like that (same with airline mileage tickets) has led me to not take a trip because a few hours before departure with nothing "invested" I just decide to skip the trip.
If only that worked with my work travel lol.
