So if you are running late and are certain you'll miss your train, just log in and cancel the ticket for a full refund. The fare difference between a coach refundable ticket and non-refundable is usually not that significant, so always worth spend the extra few dollars in my opinion.
I agree the up charge is worth the flexibility. I almost always bump up to flex. Although, at times I find having tickets like that (same with airline mileage tickets) has led me to not take a trip because a few hours before departure with nothing "invested" I just decide to skip the trip.
If only that worked with my work travel lol.
