In the future, for properties in the USA if you find yourself in this situation, call the property directly and explain your spouse will be arriving before you. Most properties will put a note on the reservation and allow your spouse to check in early. They won't care if the initial reservation was for one person. No guarantees; however, the few times I have needed to do this, it has worked out fine. YMMV....
