Dying with points is not a good idea either. They die with you. When my husband passed away, I rushed to convert his points to gift cards - my only option other than donation. Thankfully he did not have many points. The cost of transfer was not worth it.

This is a good point but I will just say that while not "points," United Miles can be transferred for free to heirs upon death. There's a thread about this on the UA forum. I suppose that's an small argument for burning or transferring other currencies before using up UA miles . Then again, everything seems to get devalued so one should try to use up these currencies sooner rather than later.
I have mentioned up thread that I finally got pushed to burn a bunch of UR points due to these changes and the sunset of the United Excursionist award perk going away on August. I also have had some life changes that permit longer travel now that wasn't possible for several years prior.
