Another seat selection question as I am very confused now - hope someone can help me out.

I have the following situation for an economy flight from KMG (Kunming) to AMS with a layover in PVG:
- trip booked on an OTA with one ticket and only one ticket number
- KMG to PVG is marketed and operated by China Eastern
- PVG to AMS is marketed by China Eastern and operated by KLM
- I am not a member of these two companies but I have SkyTeam Elite Plus (via Kenya Airways)

For the last days, I have been talking with customer services from KLM and China Eastern and guess what...
- China Eastern does not show the KLM seat map on their website and they tell me to deal with KLM for seat selection
- KLM does show the seat map and I can buy seats online but I can not get free seat selection (not a single seat shows up as free, even the regular ones). Customer Service keeps telling me they can't change the seat (which is surprising as I can buy them!) before check-in.

I have booked this flight as I wanted to fly on SkyTeam to be sure to have a window seat booked after my reservation but it seems I can't get any the preferred seating advertised.

What would be the best way to go around? Flight is next week and I'd love to be to the airport with a seat already booked - I've paid more for flying with SkyTeam but it seems pretty useless re the seat benefit advertised.
