Bidding versus an avios upgrade; bidding will likely have you higher up the list to grab any available seats close to departure (check if any open avios seats in J available now though as if there is you could potentially be awarded the avios upgrade very quickly) but with a cash cost (and of course no guarantee) . Avios option is handy if you are not too bothered about getting the upgrade versus travelling in Y but happy to jump to J for the avios cost if availability opens up. Keep in mind IAD-DUB is not a very long flight so the 'value' of the upgrade in terms of time in the air is less.

Not OP, but is it correct that an "immediate-upgrade" via cash or Avios (if either are available) will convert the fare class or somehow otherwise result in earning more Avios and tier credits? Whereas a bid upgrade (which is only possible via cash) will earn per the original fare class?
