My family hit this same issue last week, but my 17 yo was allowed to fly. I had tried every way I could think of to add emergency contact info prior to the flight, but told him they’d handle it at airport check in (PDX.)

We might’ve just gotten lucky as I bought a last minute (separate) ticket for a cousin to fly home with my kid as a surprise and early birthday gift. The teen (and young adult relative with different last name) were able to check in at PDX while checking a bag. No parent or guardian went inside. The two reservations were linked.

It never even crossed my mind to send grandpa into the airport with my teen! Glad he got home.

Possibly it helped that the kid is MVP, was flying J, and his 18th birthday was within a double digit number of hours at that point, but I wouldn’t think that should matter…
