EWR-LHR
Started with nuts and Chablis. Salad with the chilled beef are served.
I picked the short ribs, which was tender and perfectly cooked.
The usual ice cream sundae - they did not have the special caramel ice cream sundae and related toppings.
Breakfast with kale pastry was tasty - no mushrooms here.

On my last flight LAX to London, I was literally left with eating a starter salad for dinner and nothing for breakfast as everything had mushrooms or wheat and they would not allow me to get a meal from economy. So I was left with eating almost nothing but some greens a few pieces of cheese, gummy bears and ice cream for my almost 12 hour flight.
I’ve checked out my EWR to AMS flight in 10 days and of course, all the options have mushrooms or wheat. I’m terrified of ordering a gluten-free meal that it will be filled with mushrooms since they seem to be in everything now😭
Does anyone have a recommendation in regards to being edible? Should I try gluten-free or kosher and would it have any bearing at all if I called United and added my mushroom allergy to my flights if it would make a difference?
I’ve never run into this issue except for the past six months where literally every single protein has mushrooms added, including for breakfast.!!!
Any recommendations someone has besides bringing my own food on on my 8 to 14 hour flights would be appreciated as when you’re paying thousands of dollars for a ticket you at least hope to have some edible food besides snacks and dessert.
Sorry couldn’t post photos…
as you can see every meal has mushrooms if it doesn’t have wheat or it has wheat if it doesn’t have mushrooms. Why do scrambled eggs need mushrooms why does fish need mushrooms? I know this is an allergy more common than people realize as I’m allergic to all fungus so if you’re allergic to penicillin, you most likely can’t eat mushrooms. Hence, there’s literally nothing I can eat except the first course of salad 😭
Welcome to FT, RubyD!
When you have dietary restrictions, unlike a restaurant, UA only has so many options available once you are in a metal tube. The closest option that might work for you is AVML (Vegetarian meal), as that's normally served with anything with gluten or mushrooms, or just order a gluten-free meal. For breakfast, you can ask if you can have double the fruit bowl, since some people prefer to sleep in instead of having breakfast on the plane. But yes, you might want to bring backup food that you can have just in case one of those ingredients snuck in.
