Access to preferred seating is not a Star Alliance benefit, however in the past, AirNZ was quite apparently generous to other Star Alliance Gold status holders from other carriers, who could email/call and get allocated seats for free including to preferred seating.
I am afraid times have moved on, and without AirNZ status you'll need to pay for seats or take a punt for something OK at check-in. Of course, no harm is reaching out to AirNZ and just asking (chat is pretty responsive).
