I've been a frequent traveler to New Zealand from the USA for several years, and have consistently booked my flights through United Airlines. On my upcoming trip, which includes five people (two of whom are minors), I'm being required to pay for seat selection to ensure we can all sit together.

I don't recall this being a requirement on previous trips. Is this a new policy? If so, are there any known ways to avoid this fee, especially given the need for our group, including minors, to be seated together? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
