The problem is it penalizes loyal WN fliers by giving them worse seating for booking last minute tickets. Under the old system, it didn't matter if you booked a WN flight months out or within the last week, if you held WN status you would be at the front of the line during boarding and could virtually choose any seat you want. It also penalizes these road warriors who travel together with business colleagues or with their family. Under the original WN seating arrangement you could assure that yourself and your travelling party had seats beside each other. Under the assigned seating regime there is no guarantee, particularly if you aren't booking the moment WN starts selling a flight.
