For future use, I had a similar situation not long ago MHT-PHL-PIT. Booked Mrs. ATW76's ticket with cash via AA. I used AS miles. Notified day before of delay. Called AA and they were able to switch BOTH of us to connect over DCA. Didn't involve AS at all at that point, just gave the phone agent both AA confirmations. Not sure if it would work this far in advance, but might be worth a shot if AS can't help.
I tried this calling AA with an AS award ticket, was not able to make any changes and had to go through AS. I think you had a unique circumstance with a paid flight and a delay that worked in your favor.
