I think these are reasonable, IMO. I’m not sure why folks would expect redemption rates for uses other than upgrades to be great. The fact that there are ways to use them aside from letting them expire is good. That said, I feel like they are going to have to change the gifting rates for Silver and potentially Gold - the ranks at Silver in particular could get quite inflated as a result. The 1K gifting is practically useless - are there actually many in the GS ranks that fly/spend enough that they even earn that many PlusPoints in a year? I suppose that is the point, but it does not strike me as even a realistic aspirational goal.
I think the redemption rates are reasonable (even though I don’t especially like them for the non-status uses). It’s the 3/31 deadline which is upsetting — and quite frankly surprising. UA has pulled a bait-and-switch from what they led us to believe when they announced that alternate uses for Plus Points were coming mid-year. While they never implied that we would be able to cash in on these alternate uses until the end of the program year, there is a reasonable assumption that most people want to use their PP’s for upgrades and would only avail themselves of the other uses if they were unsuccessful. And the level of frustration at the ratio of failed upgrades to cleared upgrades would be mitigated if we could still find some residual value with all of our leftover PP’s that we would have used for upgrades if UA had only made PZ space available. To me that is a fair exchange. Forcing us to gamble so close to the beginning of the program year is pretty insulting. I truly wish UA would re-think this, and give us until the end of the program year to cash in our remaining PP’s for a fraction of their true value.
