The program revisions include the introduction of smartsnacks -- a $3 snack box and a $5 fresh sandwich, both of which will be changed on a regular basis. The smartsnacks snack box will contain popular, brand name non-perishable items such as chips, crackers, cheese, cookies and raisins. The smartsnacks fresh sandwiches will include vegetarian, deli meat or breakfast choices and will be available on longer flights.
Both of these meal options are revenue positive for Northwest. I believe that they opted for the "non-perishable" smartsnacks because it can supply each flights with sufficient snack for everyone without having to throw them away after each flight. As for the $5 fresh sandwich option, I think this is a money losing option for Northwest, but Northwest is opting for this option instead of forking out free food for everyone..... And when the "fresh sandwich option" is sold out, then they can continue to offer smartsnacks to the remaining customers.
The only thing not clear is how passengers are allowed to pay for these. While cash is likely one of the option, will they take the credit card on board, or will we need to pre-purchase upon e-check-in?
Now, I think it would be wise for Northwest to start investing on a inflight vending machine so that customer can purchase them at any time.
