Everything went rather smoothly, but passengers using "Air/Rail Tickets" (my terminology) were in a separate compartment on the train. Cologne is roughly the same distance from FRA as Stuttgart, though in the opposite direction. I could be mistaken, but I doubt that you can get your family DB tickets in the same train class that you have. But you should be able to reserve tickets for your family on the same train, even though you and your family would sit in different compartments. In any case, it's only a short ride.
