don't care about if it's the train is in 2nd class, but I need to buy DB tickets separately for my family in the same train class. I booked them with points and can't get the DB segment to come up.
Several years ago I obtained an award ticket using UA miles IAD-Stuttgart with a flight IAD-FRA and then a train ride from FRA to the Stuttgart Main Train Station. Everything went rather smoothly, but passengers using "Air/Rail Tickets" (my terminology) were in a separate compartment on the train. Cologne is roughly the same distance from FRA as Stuttgart, though in the opposite direction. I could be mistaken, but I doubt that you can get your family DB tickets in the same train class that you have. But you should be able to reserve tickets for your family on the same train, even though you and your family would sit in different compartments. In any case, it's only a short ride.
