I think that you will just have to accept the delay as an unfortunate outcome, but at least you got to fly Etihad home
setting aside some of the issues around special assistance etc in this case which may mean it is out of scope anyway regardless of airlines (we don't yet know the exact details), i would say this misrepresents the current case law as set out in the czech airlines case amongst others. it is entirely relevant the QF flight was on a BA codeshare, and that it incurred a delay.
