Just tried the same search of Alaska Air website and it had the award availability by month - yah! Glad to see that there was award availability for 4.5K miles on certain days on AA flights from ORF-ORD - which I assume are flights that I can add to the 60K JL business class partner award - correct?
Also, checked and verified that I can cancel AA award seats and have all miles reinstated and fees refunded pretty much right up to the time of departure - just states cancel before the first flight.
Yahoo, I now have the methodology figured out - just have to wait a few months for the early Nov 2025 seats to start popping up. Sure beats using hundreds of thousands of miles for business seats - so glad I found this discussion!
Book a separate flight to Chicago the day prior (assuming the flight is the morning ORD-TYO flight) and hotel at one of the options near the rental car center. Even with "protection" the end result of missing the ORD-TYO flight would be the AA LAX-TYO 1:25 AM flight. Panara is open at 6AM for breakfast. The flight to Tokyo is so much more relaxed with the flight to Chicago out of the way the day prior.
