I think Chase is constrained by needing Marriott to agree to all changes, and inasmuch as Marriott awarded American Express the "premium" card slot they need to stay under the radar.

Whenever there is a product refresh it's natural to make New vs Old comparisons, but the more productive comparison is New versus Other current products. Discontinued products are certainly worth a mention, but I don't see them as viable for most people.
