Mrs. GlobeTrttr checked a bag with AA at ATL for ATL-DFW-BCN last year. ATL-DFW was delayed (typical) and we were going to miss the BCN connection at DFW, so I had AA re-book us onto BA via LHR. We went to bag office at the terminal and they pulled the bag within 30 min. of the request. The AA operation at ATL is small compared to an AA hub, but I was pretty impressed with their intention to go and actually find the bag and bring it up to us from the depths.

But the better solution is to never check a bag unless you absolutely cannot avoid it.
