Split the reservation and call to change the schedule for the specific traveler. Agent is more flexible on changing travel dates. For example, I moved my LIM four days earlier and made my trip a few days longer.

There is an advantage for waiting until your travel plan is firmed up. It is one time change. You would NOT get a second chance if you used it too early. The other side of the coin is that your desired seat is gone. But the former outweighs the latter.
