If you are going to buy another ticket with another airline, and wanted to spin the dice, don't cancel your RJ ticket, keep it open and pending, as the moment you cancel you become a former customer and enforcing any EU protections becomes much more difficult. Buy an alternative flight. Once you're back and the dust has settled submit a claim for the cost of the alternative flight as RJ refused to rebook you as required under EU rules.
RJ are likely to fight this but they might pay up. If you decide to throw in the towel after some refusal you can still claim your refund for the ticket not flown and cancelled by them.
thank you, I agree.
We did consider this, but the cost of a replacement last minutes business class ticket was in the region of £8,000 for the pair of us and wasn’t a financial outlay / risk we were willing to take. This was supposed to be a fun mileage trip, and the fun had gone out of it by this point so we decided better to take the refund on offer and minimise our losses.
