I'm guess that OP stayed at a bad hotel vs. anything particular to the Spark brand, beyond it's general low-end positioning.

I've stayed at a few Sparks - not luxury by any means - but fine for the short overnight stay at an airport or highway roadside that I use them for.

Checking hotel reviews before booking usually goes a long way in setting expectations, IME.
