Airspace Closure delays & help
As a result of the current conflict, aircraft are avoiding the airspace of Iran, Iraq and Syria. The situation is fast moving and of course this may be outdated as you read this. Looking at FlightRadar 24, I see that many flights from Europe are now taking 'The Sphinx Route', so across the Mediterranean to Egypt, then a hard left at the Sphinx into Saudi and onwards to the Gulf. This adds to the journey time and must be costing airlines a lot in terms of extra fuel and crew hours. I expect that many on tight connections will end up being rebooked.
For my part, I am travelling DUB-DOH next week arriving at 1725. Then a two hour connection to BKK QR 838 departing 1925. Should still be fine, but I would feel more comfortable on the QR 830 at 2030 to BKK. I called QR and they refused to re-route me without penalties which I guess is fair enough. I expect this is difficult for a lot of people and it would interesting to hear how QR is handling the situation on the ground.
