I also have a question regarding the segment/connection

For example
I want fly from SFO to ADD. I don't care about the connection. But I don't have the firm date yet. So should I book a connected flight like SFO-IAD-ADD? Or should I book 2 individual flights with a min 24 hours stopover in between? I heard the availability is lower if you have 2 segments connected and if you book 2 flights with less than 24 hours in between it's considered a connected flight. Even both segments are available, the connected flight might not. Is that right?
