They still exist, but primarily to replace no-shows and misconnects.
FWIW, UA announced the same thing I think a few weeks ago. No more mileage upgrade award chart (theirs was miles + copay too, but much more variable than on AA, and dependent on fare class).
I don't like the waitlist game, so almost always just find a reasonable J fare or Y fare + reasonable J buy-up.
