Losing the miles plus cash option is a negative but if this gets a lot of people to burn off their miles in a very inefficient fashion that takes a bunch of liability off of AA's books without them having to screw around with the mileage redemption rates.
Nothing is done in isolation. I have no doubt this is just part of AA’s eventual plan to copy DL and UA in dynamically indexing all awards on AA metal to roughly 1 cent/mile.

C space isn't that rare, especially if you know when/how/where to look. I have cleared lots of SWU upgrades when there was not plenty of seats left or generous cash offers.
