The same thing has been happening with paid upgrades for a while now. I can often buy F for less than it costs to buy Y and then upgrade to F.
But at least with paid tickets one generally has the ability to change the ticket to take advantage of such fare differences instead of buying overpriced upgrades.
In the examples I'm pointing out - switching between a paid ticket and a redemption is not really a thing....
