I was really dumb, I was calling and had the website up at the same time. The Australian customer service gave me a US number to call but while I did that I could see on my screen 2 tickets available so I went through and got to everything except click pay since everyone was saying I should do the return through the phone. The US number was a spam number so I called back Australia and eventually got hold of the correct person but it was all sold out by then.
When you call to make things quicker if you have an outward booking already, make sure you select the option

> I want to modify an existing booking
> Modify an avios booking
I messed up and selected I want to create a new booking so when I got through to someone and when I explained what I wanted they said sorry call again and pick the other other option... I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens otherwise I might have to cancel my outward flight

If you have enough Avios to book a full fare return online, do that and call them after (or message them on twitter) and they will apply the voucher and give you 50% of your Avios back.
