This post explains all. Your original sentence "Can I not pick up my checked bag at AMS?" sounded like you wanted to pick it up when in fact you mean "Can I NOT pick up my checked bag at AMS?" Language is a funny thing. In the meantime you have got the message. You do NOT have to pick up your bag in AMS, it will be checked through
