Keep in mind that Terminal 4 (where most JFK flights leave from) is a bit of a mess right now due to construction. Essentially the terminal is split into two with the lower gates accessible from the head house directly and the higher gates accessible via an underground tunnel.

Just make sure you look at signs with directions for your gate number.
