Folk say it’s possible sometimes but I wonder if it’s just reports of the offer being there; I don’t know if anyone has gone ahead and actually secured an upgrade.
Back from trip and reporting that offer never popped for me.
On outbound ORDLHR we were delayed 3+ hours to past midnight due to a dust storm (first time in Chicago since the 1930s!), so was just too damn tired to care.
On return it didn’t pop and I forgot to ask at counter or gate. Flight went out with 4 open in F (we sat in 5A and 5K so could see). I would have paid for an upgrade had I been able to.
