Did you notice any "malfunctioning" seats or seats where the crew decided to downgrade people so they could rest?
I didn't see any downgrades because of inop seats, crew was apologetic to those pax whose seats were broken.
By broken, I mean to say that some of the functionality is lost, such as the recline mechanism, or the power points, etc.
The seat in the upright position is unaffected, and so is the soft product.
So definitely does not make sense to instead be downgraded to the back of the curtain, since the upright seat and service are still so much better up front.
Tip: Make sure to check in as early as you can, 3-4 hours beforehand. Airport staff knows which seats are inop and can switch you to a working seat. The last check-in pax do not have that luxury.
