I used my Shanghai metro card (one of the red ones) in Kunming last year. I didn't try the Alipay version in Kunming (I've only used that in Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing),, but I assumed it worked everywhere too?

ETA: I vaguely recall that foreign credit cards can't be the source of funding for transit in both Wx and Ap. This isn't something I pay much attention to, though. I set the my Mastercard as the preferred source of funding in Wx and Ap. Then, for any merchants/recipients that can't accept Visa/MC, it simply pulls funds from balance or a Chinese bank account instead. Since we're usually talking about small amounts, it's easy to not notice this happening. For anyone without connected Chinese cards, keeping around Y300 in balance (i.e. get someone else to send you money) is a decent strategy.
