Club Europe v Qantas Domestic Business
I've just completed a trip to Australia where I flew 5 sectors in QF doemstic Business. Given the negative comments on CE in some threads here and people calling for dedicated European business class cabins I thought I would give my views on the comparison
Routing was MEL-BNE (Rail) CNS-BNE-PER-ADL-MEL
Ticketing
I paid £2,100 for the full itinery booked 6 months ahead in cheapest I class. Compared to CE I class the tickets are flexible. No change fee and fully refundable. Pricing all seemed to be one way, so a return is double the cost. Even with a very favourable exchange rate I tink it was more expensive than CE. The website and the app worked perfectly for me.
Checkin
They had one dedicated checkin for Business down to OWE. I checked in my bag even though it was cabin size and didn't have to wait much. It also came out very quickly on arrival
Priority security
There wasn't any except at MEL where it was closed. However it wasn't needed. I was through with no waiting at every airport. They had the modern scanners, good organisation and plenty of resources
Lounges
Generally there are 2 types of lounge. The Business lounge is for business ticket holders and OWE. The Qantas Club is for OWS in economy. Some airports only had a club lounge. I thought the business lounges were superior to the BA domestic lounges in GLA etc but there was no where near as much food / drink choice as in T5, except for the barrista coffee service. There is no alchohol before 12 noon. Club lounges have slightly less food / drink options. (Total contrast to the Escape lounge in MAN where I started my journey from the UK at 7.30AM. You could spot the BA pax they were the only people not on beer.)
Boarding
Very well organised by groups like BA but groups are strictly enforced. The scanners reject the BP if the group hasn't been called. Cabin crew come out to supervise the boarding so there's no waiting on the jet bridge. Like BA Business is group 1.
Seating
Three rows of 2+2 on the 737 and 2+1 on the E190. The seats are much nicer to sit in as they are wider with more leg room in rows 2 and 3, but the same as CE in row 1. However, I really missed the side table for meals when I felt like I didn't have as much space. There's no curtain between the cabins just a fixed divider over the seats
Catering
Slightly better than CE I would say. Much nicer tableware, they had cups and saucers. Wine was poured from big bottles but there was mostly just 1 white, 1 red and some really nice Aussie sparking in small bottles. There were pre departure drinks in the form of a bottle of water on the seat or handed out before departure. There were no menus on any of the flights but there were 2 or 3 choices of main course with a salad but just a bar of chocolate for desert. On the longer flights there was ice cream and chocolate later in the flight.
In flight service
Generally very professional, attentive and friendly. However, they seemed obsessive about clearing away even full glasses as soon as the flight deck announced 30 mins to landing. My full glass was taken well before the seat belt sign came on and I was told I couldn't have a plastic cup. The exception was ADL-MEL which had a 54 min flight time with a hot meal service. They were topping up wine well into decent and came around with plastics.
Overall view.
I think its mixed. The whole experience felt slightly more premium but it probably comes at a higher cost. The seats are definitely much more comfortable for sitting in with more legroom further back but I found it cramped for eating by comparison and I think it would be the same for working
