The value of a Rewards Program member has moved to total actual spend rather than no. of flights and distance. BA is just following the market and its leaders, whether we like it or not.
Huge difference is associated spend. There is a way to spend outside the program that allows you to rise up the tiers on the US 3. BA doesn't have that.
