My husband and I are flying to Paris in mid-June and we have a two night IST Stopover on return. We have separate PNR's, both in J. My plan is for each of us to book a single room (TK website will not allow a double) and then write to Turkish and ask them to combine the two singles and give us a double room.
Each of the single rooms is most likely to be a double room (for single use). Large hotels seldom provide rooms designed for only one person. So rather up to you what you do with the extra room - though maybe let the hotel sort you out when you check in. Contacting TK is likely to be a frustrating experience: they're not at their best when it comes to customer service.
If you intend to use public transport from the airport I'd go for the Lokalist - which is in the Marriott portfolio. The Havas express bus will take you directly to Taksim. The bus terminus is by the Point Hotel, at the NW corner of the square. The Lokalist is on the quieter side of the square, across Gezi Park.
The hotel, as well as the Sisli and Pera properties, can be reached by metro from the airport, but it's a journey requiring an awkward change of line at Gayrettepe.
If you're travelling in by taxi then your best choices for tourism are the Lokalist, or the Pera and Sisli hotels.
