I did exactly that a while back. It was claimed at the time by afters that the systems don’t communicate.
How else to explain that the newer (UA) booking was cancelled (without informing me) within 48 hrs? It was full J revenue. Luckily, I caught it and I was able to resurrect the UA booking/seat assignment with the help of a kind patient agent.. I was specifically asked about when I was cancelling the AC booking (Aeroplan refundable) during the process. He did not disclose how he knew I had another booking (014 stock).
Note, originating US airports were different. Final destination was YYZ for AE tx and a US destination for the UA tx. Departure was the same day.
