So putting these two points together: if my teen was 14, and the only adjacent seats were in Extra, then they'd seat us there. But since teen is 16, they'll apply the regular (non-family) seating policy, and if there are any two seats in standard economy then they'll put us there?
That sounds about right. Of course, you might be able to convince a fellow passenger to switch like for like, but that wouldn't do you any good if both you and your child are assigned middle seats.
