Over the last week I've taken two meal flights in F where I didn't choose a meal in the app. The FAs on both flights have greeted me with "Hi Mr. Hartmann, I see you preordered the xxxxx" to which I reply, "Oh, I didn't choose anything". Usually it's the only item they have left or the cheese plate. Is this some clever wording by the FA or is AS just assigning meals to people who don't choose anything?

I noticed I wasn't the only person on the flights who had the same experience.
