I've read reports that changing the date within the cancellation penalty period does not change the refund-ability of the reservation.
I had to change the date on a trip in Feb the day of check-in due to illness, did it via phone with my concierge. Later, prices dropped and I almost cancelled and rebooked, but decided against that due to the DPs I saw saying I would be prone to the cancellation fee of the original res.
