Circumnavigation of Ireland (Day 9 of 20)

Day 9: (Inis Mór)

Today I caught the ferry (shown by the red line on the map) near Galway to Inishmore, which is the largest of the three Aran islands, and the island featured in the movie “The Banshees of Inisherin”. After a quick 40 minute ferry ride we arrived at the little harbor where I had booked a bicycle for the day. Street ready 21-speed mountain bike.

I rode all the way to the end of the island to the Earagh Lighthouse, about 16 miles round trip. Man was my butt sore!

I am including a bunch of random shots of Inishmore. It is so otherworldly. Had a bite to eat while waiting for the ferry back and a few pints of water. I got sunburned to a crisp riding all day, but it felt so good.

Even met someone on the island who runs a bar with the same last name as me. We compared notes and it appears quite likely we are related as people with our family name existed in two places, West Clare and then much further east Ireland and we moved down into Cork before emigrating, so this makes a lot of sense. Great day out!

My route for the day:

My ride to the island.

Inishmore sights…. (lots of stone here so every single wall seems to be made of it.)

Very few people live here.
