It depends how much you value your time.

To maintain status means making correspondances in Paris or Amsterdam that eat up time, which you may ordinarily not have to make. For instance, let's say you need to go to Frankfurt/Main or Bucharest for work. Plenty of directs from MAD, but adding a stop at CDG or AMS means another 2-3h of travel time and a risk of lost luggages if applicable. Or you want a nice week-end at NCE, you could get there direct with IB, or spend your whole day with the correspondance at CDG.
